Slip The Lark vann på lördagkvällen sitt heat i första omgången av Red Mills Waterford Masters, så här skriver Michael Fortune på sin sida.

LARK DEFENDS IN STYLE

Reigning champion Slip The Lark got his defence of the Red Mills Masters off to a winning start when he won the third heat in the first round at Waterford on Saturday.

This was a typical Slip The Lark (Larkhill Jo/ Slip The Posse) performance as he broke fast from six and led up from Scholes Fantasy and Ballymac Under. The latter challenged strongly down the far side but was forced to change sides on the run-in and Oaks winner Skywalker Queen came with a big late run to finish three parts of a length second behind the Pat Buckley trained Slip The Lark in 29.81, with Ballymac Under just a head back in third.

Fastest heat winner was Greta Scotland’s Carib King (Top Honcho/ May Said So) in a thrilling opening heat. This Graham Holland trained dog was only third down the back as Broadacres Turbo and St Louis Spirit battled it out neck and neck up front. St Louis had a marginal lead on the final bend but was forced wide by Broadacres and Carib King came through to win by a neck from St Louis Spirit in 29.73, with Broadacres Turbo a half length third.

The second heat saw the Peter Cronin trained Global Hope (Droopys Maldini/ Jethart Baby) come from way off the pace to snatch a late, late head victory over Star Of Aaron in 30.25 with pace setting Daring Ace just a neck adrift in third.
